19th Century Ralph Turnbull Specimen Wood Table
An impressive early 19th centuryRalph Turnbull specimen work table, the hinged lid profusely inlaid with geometric sunburst surrounded by interlaced heart motifs and comprised of a plethora of exotic woods including various species from the palm, satinwood and rosewood families. The lid opensĀ to reveal a satinwood partitioned interior with silk linings and the underside of the lid displays a further, equally complex segmented sunburst design. The outer edges of the top follow the geometric designs of the lid and are executed with incredibly fine attention to detail. The whole raised on a tapered hexagonal stem terminating in a triform base with beautifully carved lion paw feet. This table is almost certainly attributable to Ralph Turnbull, Jamaica. C.1825 – Label with wax seal to the underside – also inscribed “Boley Hill E. Hayward”.
