A fine Nineteenth Century Feraghan carpet, in a rare square format, with a restrained, overall design.
Early Feraghan carpets were popular during the 19th century, woven the same region as the equally sought-after Ziegler Mahal carpets. These pieces are often seen in grand houses in Europe and the UK, known for their quiet formality, soft wool and harmonious colours. Feraghan carpets are especially unique in that they manage to harmonise both tribal and formal elements of rug design, and therefore have the versatility to suit a wide variety of interior styles.
This 19th Century example employs a soft, faded bronze colour field, well framed by eight individual borders. The design combines a charming, monochrome all-over drawing with a wide variety of colours in its accents, including cornflower blue, sage green and various ochre tones, all in gracefully aged vegetable dyes. This, combined with its rare square format, helps to make this carpet truly stand out among other examples of its type.
This carpet has had some age-related restoration, done to a high-standard, bit is in very good condition for everyday use, its outer borders all well maintained and with a fine, weathered patina.
A handsome carpet with a real sense of restrained grace, which would find itself at home in any setting.
