Hand Carved Swiss Black Forest Carved Boar Figure
Carved as a Wild Boar
From our Accessories collection we are pleased to offer this Swiss Black Forest Boar Figure. The Figure carved from linden wood and stood upon a raised square wood plinth base. The Boar naturally carved with mouth agape showing its tusks while it trots across a rocky outcrop. The Swiss Black Forest Boar Figure dates to the early 20th century and the Art Deco period circa 1920.
Linden Wood is a pale white to cream colour with very subtle growth rings. The color is mostly uniform throughout the surface of the wood. Tends to age to a yellow or pale brown colour over time and has a fine even texture, which is preferred for wood carvers.
Black Forest carvings come with the common misconception that they are from Germany when they actually come from Switzerland. Originally named Brienzerware because of where it originated, the carvings became a type of grand tour souvenir and tourists would pick them up on their travels around Switzerland. The golden age of Black Forest Carvings dated around the 1900s and range from the most common being Bears to birds, dogs, gnomes and many other figures in a range of carvings from figures to tables and everything in-between.
