Swedish Kilim by Ingegard Silow
Mid-20th century
Ingegerd Silow was a 20th century Swedish visual artist who was also a prolific design for kilims. There is a long tradition of kilim weaving in Sweden which reached it full expression in the mid-20th century when a generation of designers and weavers produced kilims in abstract and geometric designs compatible with contemporaneous Scandinavian furniture and decoration. Silow was one of that generation. This piece is interesting in several ways. Rather than geometric figures, the design appears to be a row of stylised butterflies. The colours are quite intense and vibrant while the small format suggests it may well have been woven specifically for a special space. Silow’s monograph appears in the bottom right corner. In excellent condition and ready for immediate use. This piece would work equally well on a wall on floor.
