A charming early tribal piece from the Caucasus, dated to 1914 by the artist’s signature.
Antique Kazak rugs, woven in the Southern Caucasus, are among the most highly prized tribal weavings, famed for the diversity of their designs, bold palettes, and the high density of knots in their weaves, lending a crisp clarity to the geometric patterns in their drawing.
This early piece, dated by the artist’s signature to 1914, is a handsome example of its type, featuring an open field, overlayed with an ivory and denim blue central medallion, and well-framed by a wide, tripartite border, decorated with palmettes, creatively repeated in a variety of colours and forms. The wide variety of tones and the expressive, playful character of its composition give this work a real tribal charm, combined with a balanced, spacious composition.
A rare find, and a wonderful work of design, this piece is preserved in very good condition for everyday use, and would make a characterful addition to any setting.
