A fine early 20th Century Heriz carpet, with an uncommon all-over design and charming cornflower blue accents.
Early Heriz carpets from Northwest Persia are in a class of their own. Prized for their geometric designs, fine durable construction, and creative use of vegetable-dyed colours, they make ideal long-lasting rugs and have always stood out for their striking tribal motifs.
This charming Heriz carpet, dating to the turn of the last century, has a creative overall design, rather than the traditional central medallion motif, inspired by rare 19th-century rugs from the Caucasus, and lending the composition a feeling of space and balance. The warm ochre red field serves to compliment the variety of gracefully aged vegetable-dyed colours in the drawing – including accents in soft cornflower blue, tan, sage green and ivory – framed by a wide indigo border.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its fringes and outer borders preserved on all sides – its colours have taken on a characterful patina with age.
In our experience, Heriz carpets prove to be among the most versatile decorative weavings, with the ability to unite both modern and traditional design elements – this piece is a fine example, to suit a wide variety of spaces.
