A c. 1900 Bidjar carpet, with a bold floral motif, stamped over a warm terracotta red ground, framed by a wide decorative border.
Antique Bidjar carpets from Northwest Persia are famed among Persian tribal village rugs for the high quality of their weaves and striking designs and colours. Bidjar is situated along a corridor between the borders of Persia, Anatolia, and the Caucasus, and this wide variety of cultural influences is well-reflected in the diverse range of styles and patterns represented in its carpets.
This striking example, dating to c. 1900 has an unusually creative design and wonderful balanced colour palette, with bold floral motifs, in shaded of ivory, tan, sage green and cornflower blue, stamped in an all-over design across a warm terracotta red ground, and well framed by a wide, decorative border.
In very good to excellent condition, with its vegetable-dyed colours taking on a charming patina with age.
A handsome piece, with a rare feeling of spontaneity, which would add personality to any setting.
