A c. 1890 Ziegler Sultanabad carpet, with a rare ivory ground and grand-scale palmette design.
Ziegler Sultanabad carpets were originally commissioned in Persia for the Western market during the late 19th Century, to complement Western furnishing tastes, quickly becoming popular across the UK and Europe, thanks to their unique, grand scale drawings, quiet formality, and understated colours, which continue to make them highly sought-after additions to modern homes today, thanks to their ability to unite both classic and contemporary elements in a room.
This striking 19th Century example features a grand-scale palmette design, over a rare ivory colour ground, well suited to this piece’s well-balanced, open composition. The artist has used a wonderful shade of green in the central field, as well as in the wide border that frames it, uncommon in this type of weaving and employed in a playful contrast with the warm vegetable-dyed ochre tones in the drawing.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with some age-related restoration done to a high standard, while maintaining this carpet’s original charming patina.
A sophisticated example, in a large format, to compliment a stylish interior.
