A Ziegler Sultanabad carpet dating the late 19th Century, with a rare aubergine grey field framed by a wide terracotta border.
Ziegler Sultanabad carpets were originally commissioned in Persia for the Western market during the late 19th Century, to complement Western furnishing tastes, quickly becoming popular across the UK and Europe, thanks to their unique, grand scale drawings, quiet formality, and understated colours, which continue to make them sought-after additions to modern homes today, thanks to their ability to unite both classic and contemporary design elements in a room.
This fine 19th Century example employs a rare muted blue-grey field, which serves as a wonderfully complementary backdrop to the warm terracotta, ivory, sage green and cornflower blue tones in the drawing, framed by a wide decorative border. All these colours have been worked in organic vegetable dyes which have taken on a delicate patina with age, lending the carpet a sense of understated grace.
This early Ziegler Sultanabad carpet is in very good condition for everyday use, still retaining it outer borders on all sides.
A stylish and unique example that would suit a wide variety of interior settings.
