Shekarlu Rug, Qashqai Confederation, South Persia
The nomadic tribes of Persia have a long and rich tradition of rug weaving. Rugs, saddle bags and other utilitarian items were woven, all by hand, often in the harshest of environments. This wonderful rug was woven by nomadic weavers in southern Persia in the last decades of the 19th century in the final years before the appearance of synthetic dyes. Although it has a design typically associated with the Shekarlu subtribe of the Qashqai Federation, the weave and other elements suggest it may have been woven by another of the subtribes. Designs were obviously fluid and moved among the weavers of the various tribal groups, but this rug has a joy and freedom to it differentiating itself from the more austere weavings of the Shekarlu. It has lovely quality hand-spun wool and beautiful natural dyes. Note the lovely lime green border. The pile is even and thin with minor restorations in places. Note the richness and exuberance of the design filled with tribal amulets, stylised animals, birds and floral ornaments. Professionally cleaned in our workshop. This is a charming and authentic tribal rug with great character which should appeal to both collectors and decorators. he nomadic tribes of Persia have a long and rich tradition of rug weaving.
