An exquisite Agra carpet from Northern India, with a restrained colour scheme and elegant composition.
The city of Agra in Northern India – best known as the home of the Taj Mahal – boasts a long tradition of master rug weaving. Its carpets, renowned for their exemplary quality and artistry, drawing on the Mughal period designs of the 16th Century, can be found in historic homes across the UK and Europe.
This stunning 19th Century example – a rare find, especially given its age and size –boasts a remarkably tight weave which gives a crisp clarity to its drawing. The muted green ground provides a wonderfully complimentary backdrop to the gracefully aged vegetable-dyed colours in its design. It features a simple, elegant composition in the central field, framed by over a dozen borders.
In very good to excellent condition and still retains its original borders on all four sides – remarkable for a rug dating 1890.
A sophisticated Agra carpet with a quiet formality, well suited to a stylish interior setting.
