A mid-century Bessarabian kilim rug, with an open field and warm terracotta ground.
£2,800.00
A mid-century Bessarabian kilim rug, with an open field and warm terracotta ground.
The tradition of Bessarabian kilim weaving dates to the later period of Ottoman rule over the Eastern Balkans – broadly, the territory now covered by Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova – and is known for an interesting combination of design elements from Anatolian carpets, as well as from high end European weavings.
This mid 20th Century piece is an especially charming example, featuring a wonderful soft colour ground and a simple overall design, with floral motifs in pastel shades repeated across the field, and well-framed by a wide ivory tone border; a restrained, earthy palette, well complimented by this piece’s balanced, elegant composition.
A fine and unique example of its type, rare in this square format, this stylish mid-century piece is retained in very good condition for everyday use, to suit a sophisticated interior.
