Mahal Carpet
West Persia, Late 19th century
Woven around 1880 in west Persia, this lovely Mahal carpet has many desirable features which make it instantly appealing. The colours are all spot-on and work together well to create a very happy overall impression. Note the terracottas, light blues and particularly the yellows in the spandrels. I love the way the dyes have mellowed over the generations, and the exquisite combination of colours reveals high aesthetic values. The design is also appealing. The well-known Herati design is drawn in an open manner which is easy on the eye, while the diamond medallion is likewise beautifully drawn and appears to be floating above the field. All very delightful. In addition, the squarish size is notable, and is a format that rarely appears in antique Persian carpets. This carpet has been cherished over the generations and has remained in good condition with minimal repair and just the right amount of wear to give it the elusive lived-in look. Professionally cleaned and ready for immediate use, and is ideal for many traditional and contemporary decorative schemes.
