Large Heriz Carpet, late 19th Century
North-West Persia
19th century Heriz carpets are renowned for their primary colours, in particular lovely reds and blues. However this piece has a very different aesthetic, with a pastel palette. Note the soft terracotta field, and subtle yellows, pinks, light blues and greens. Even the dark blue is a softer shade. The design is very elegant and well-spaced. The medallion has some intriguing ornamentation and I like the bold drawing of the anchors at each end in a subtle shade of aquamarine. The border complements the field well and is nicely spaced. The carpet is made with hand spun wool with harmonious abrashes or colour changes throughout. This is a handsome carpet which would work well in many traditional or contemporary settings and in many kinds of spaces. It has survived the generations in good pile and it has recently been professionally cleaned.
