Tobacco Jar
A tobacco jar is a lidded container designed to store loose pipe tobacco, keeping it fresh, dry and protected from the air. Traditionally made from ceramic, glass, wood or metal, these jars often feature a tight-fitting lid—sometimes with a cork or inner liner—to help preserve moisture levels and maintain the tobacco’s aroma.
From the 18th century onward, tobacco jars became popular household and gentleman’s-study accessories, with many produced in decorative styles ranging from simple utilitarian forms to highly ornate examples with figural lids, humidor inserts or maker’s marks.
