French Verdure Tapestry. Circa 1700.
This highly attractive tapestry was probably woven in the Aubusson or Felletin workshops in the early 18th century. The materials are a combination of wool and silk. The design depicts a country landscape with luscious foliage, a running stream, birds and two Chinese-style pagodas. Chinoiserie was very much in vogue during this period. The scene is framed by an elegant acanthus leaf border. Exquisite colours, especially a liberal use of red which brings the composition to life. Cherished over the generations, it has had scattered repairs but retains its true character. It has recently been professionally cleaned and has a new linen lining. Ready for immediate use.
