A c. 1890 Tabriz carpet, in the manner of masterweaver Hadji Jalili, with a muted, earthy palette.
Antique Tabriz carpets are distinguished by their fine weaves and remarkable adherence to the traditions of Classical Persian rug design. This elegant c. 1890s example is associated with the Master weaver, Hadji Jalili, well known as the artist behind some of the most exquisite and highly sought-after pieces of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many of which can be spotted in grand historic homes across the UK and Europe.
This carpet features a charming, earthy colour palette, with tones of light caramel, ivory, olive green, and ochre, all in vegetable dyes that have taken on a fine patina with age, lending the work a sense of quiet grace. The composition employs a central medallion framed by four spandrels, overlaid with a repeated pattern across the field – despite using a medallion however, this rug has a well-balanced layout, with an all-over pattern, well complemented by its understated use of colour.
Preserved in very good condition for everyday use, with some age-related restoration, done to a high standard.
A particularly attractive example of its type, rare in this size, which would feel at home in any setting.
