An unusual Sarouk rug, dated to c. 1890, with a remarkably high quality weave and deep carnelian field.
Antique Sarouk carpets are amongst the most luxurious decorative Persian room size carpets. Their style, quality and quiet formality have made them extremely popular in the West, particularly during the 19th century. They were created in a region in western Persia where Ziegler Sultanabad and Mahal carpets are made and are distinguished by their tight weaves and soft velvety excellent quality wool.
A pleasant Sarouk rug dating c.1890 with remarkable quality and lustrous wool. The well-balanced artistic drawing is unique in comparison to the traditional central medallion motif design. The subtle terracotta field complements the array of natural dyed colours including light blue, green and ivory, framed by a tasteful border. The pleasant drawing is surprisingly spacious in relation to its small format.
This fine Sarouk rug is in very good practical condition for everyday use, still retaining its outer borders and short fringes at both ends. A charming example to complement a tasteful setting.
