A c. 1860 Khorassan carpet, with a delicate floral design over an ivory ground.
The city of Khorassan, in Northeast Persia, is home to an ancient and prestigious tradition of weaving, stretching back as far as the Sassanid Period (241-651 A.D.) – its pieces are best known today for the diversity of their designs, and the quality of their weaves.
This early example, dating to c. 1860, has a charming naivety to its drawing, with vegetal motifs in tones of sage green and terracotta red, repeated over an ivory ground, and framed by a wide border. Not only does this piece feature an unusual, creative design, but also a square format, uncommon in carpets of its type.
Remarkably well preserved for its age, in very good condition, still retaining its original outer borders, this piece is a true rare find and would make a wonderful addition to any interior.
