An unusual 19th Century Heriz carpet, with a rare saffron colour border and bold graphic drawing.
Early Heriz carpets from north-west Persia are in a class of their own. Prized for their geometric designs, fine durable construction and creative vegetable-dyed colours, they make ideal long-lasting rugs, and have always stood out for their striking tribal motifs. In our experience, Heriz carpets prove to be among the most versatile decorative weavings, with the ability to unite both modern and traditional design elements in a room.
This Heriz carpet, dating to c. 1890, is a fine example of its type. Being an earlier piece, it employs an expressive, creative colour scheme, particularly the sky-blue in the spandrels and the rare saffron tone in the wide border which frames the central field, which serves to compliment the bold, graphic drawing in its design. All of these colours have been produced with organic vegetable dyes, which have taken on a fine patina with age.
This carpet is in very good practical condition for everyday use, its borders preserved on all sides, though with some minor age related restoration work, done to a high standard.
A beautiful carpet, to add charm and personality to any space.
