A c. 1920 Chinese Art Deco carpet, with a rare saffron colour ground.
Pioneered by Walter Nichols, an American in China whose workshops were active from 1924 into the 1930s, Chinese Art Deco carpets represent a real high point in the history of 20th Century design. These pieces are highly sought after, standing out for their unique combination of traditional Chinese elements, alongside design motifs borrowed from the Art Deco movement, which dominated the decorative arts of America and Europe during the period.
This example features a rare saffron colour field, playfully contrasted with the cornflower blue tones in its floral design – a restrained palette, well suited to this piece’s open, well-balanced composition.
Retained in excellent condition for everyday use, with its borders preserved on all four sides.
A true design classic, which would make a fine addition to any interior.
