Fine Caucasian Kilim. East Caucasus, Circa 1880
This immaculate Caucasian kilim was woven in the Kuba district of the Eastern Caucasus in the last quarter of the 19th century. Technically, it is a masterpiece with fine wool and wonderful dyes. The quality is exceptional too. The design is dominated by the repeating stylised lighting palmette, often referred to as a ‘racing car’, but derived from 18th century Kuba ‘blossom’ carpets. This piece has survived in exceptional condition, having been hung up for most of its life. Professionally cleaned and ready for immediate use, this is a highly decorative and striking kilim which would enliven many settings.
