POA
An early Ziegler Mahal carpet, with a charming muted red field and allover palmette design.
Ziegler Mahal carpets were originally commissioned in Persia for the Western market during the late 19th Century, to complement European furnishing tastes, quickly becoming sought-after additions in stately homes across the UK and Europe, thanks to their unique, grand scale drawing, quiet formality, and understated colours.
This finely woven Ziegler Mahal carpet, with short pile in lustrous wool, and gracefully aged natural vegetable dyes, features a wonderful, understated palette, with a muted terracotta ground, duck egg blue tones in the border and the drawing, and ivory accents throughout. The artist has opted for a balanced, open composition, with large scale floral designs, framed by a stylish border of generous proportions, reflecting a more modern aesthetic sensibility.
A highly desirable decorative piece, preserved in good condition for everyday use, especially considering its age, still retaining its original outer borders and short fringes on both sides, with a mild, characterful patina, to suit a wide variety of interiors.
