A flatweave carpet from the early 20th Century, with an expressive, tribal design and earthy colour palette.
Antique Soumac flatweaves from the Caucasus are exceptionally durable: stronger and longer lasting than kilims. These pieces are extraordinarily finely woven, showcasing richly detailed motifs, borrowed from ancient tribal symbols native to the region, and are highly sought after due to their expressive, playful character and use of natural dyed colours.
This handsome flatweave, dating to the beginning of the last century, boasts a particularly bold, graphic drawing in relation to its format, with each motif in the central field, as well as the in pattern across its inner borders, cleverly repeated in a wide variety of earthy, vegetable-dyed colours, including ivory, aubergine, denim blue and olive green, over a soft terracotta ground – a more spontaneous design than other examples of its type and era.
Retained in good practical condition for everyday use – amazingly, its original, unopened fringes have been preserved on both sides: a remarkable feature for a rug of this age.
A characterful tribal carpet, which would add personality and charm to a classic or contemporary space.
