‘Bessarabian’ Kilim, Ukraine, Circa 1880
Woven in the Poltava region of eastern Ukraine in the latter part of the 19th century, this lovely wool kilim has a design of repeating floral sprigs on an ivory ground framed by a black border decorated with a meandering vine, leaves and flowers. Although very much in the Ukrainian folk-art tradition, this simple but elegant arrangement has universal appeal and would work well in many types of decorative settings. The subtle colours and sophisticated weaving technique are also typical of Poltava work. Professionally cleaned and in very good condition, this lovely piece is ready for immediate use.
