A c. 1880 French Savonnerie carpet, with a well balanced palette and elegant design.
Savonnerie pieces are undoubtedly the most prestigious of all European knotted pile carpets; the Savonnerie manufactory was first established in 1615, by Pierre DuPont, in a disused soap factory downstream of Paris, in part in response to a desire among the aristocracy to reinvigorate the French decorative arts. Until 1768, Savonnerie carpets were produced exclusively by commission of the French royalty, and served as some of the nation’s most high-value diplomatic gifts, gracing the palaces of high-ranking nobility all across Europe. These pieces enjoyed particular favor during the reign of Napoleon, as a staple of Empire Style design, popular internationally among those seeking to emulate the tastes of the French upper classes. Waddesdon Manor, a Victorian mansion well-known for its vast collection of French artworks, possesses nineteen Savonnerie carpets.
This wonderful 19th Century example features a subtle, understated palette, with muted champagne, plum, and coral tones over a dusky pink ground, and sage green accents in the detailing. The composition employs a central lozenge, framed by a wide, decorative border, all adorned with delicate scrolling motifs, and repeated bands of peach and white roses; in the ‘language of flowers’ – that is, the symbolic meanings associated with different coloured roses according to the rules of 19th Century courtship – a combination which evokes love, joy, and grace.
A beautiful early piece, and a rare find given its age and large format, this carpet is retained in good condition for everyday use, with healthy pile throughout – though with some older restoration, finished to a high standard – possessing a refined elegance to suit a tasteful interior.
