A fine c. 1920s Walter Nichols Chinese carpet, with an allover scrolling vegetable design on a cornflower blue field.
Pioneered by Walter Nichols, an American in China whose workshops were active from 1924 into the 1930s, Chinese Art Deco carpets represent a real high point in the history of 20th Century design. These pieces are highly sought after, standing out for their unique combination of traditional Chinese elements, alongside design motifs borrowed from the Art Deco movement, which dominated the decorative arts of America and Europe during the period.
This fine c. 1920s example blues a delicate ton-sur-ton effect in the central field, with an all-over scrolling pattern worked in sky blue tones over a denim ground, and surrounded by an ivory border. Its composition has a rare sense of space and balance, with a restrained palette and design lending a modern aesthetic sensibility to the work.
Retaineded in very good condition for everyday use, with its outer borders preserved on all sides.
A charming carpet, to suit a wide variety of settings.
