A Tekke Main carpet, dating to the beginning of the 20th Century, with an earthy palette and balanced overall design.
Tekke carpets are instantly recognizable for their distinctive stamped elephant foot patterns – early pieces even more so, well known for their bold, visually arresting drawings. Made by the weavers of the Tekke tribes in Turkoman in Central Asia, Tekke rugs are highly sought-after for their high-quality wool and use of rich natural dyes, and are widely appreciated as among the finest weavings from the region. These pieces are truly timeless works of art, well suited to decorate a wide variety of spaces.
This piece, being an early example, boasts a warm terracotta ground, rather than the more conventional deep red. This forms the backdrop to the various earth tones in its design, with shades of camel and ivory, which employs an open, balanced composition, with repeated medallions across the field.
In very good condition for everyday use, retaining its borders and short fringes on all sides.
A charming tribal piece, which would compliment either a contemporary or classic interior.
