A Heriz carpet, dating to the turn of the last century, with a creative, allover pattern and warm terracotta ground.
Early Heriz carpets from north-west Persia are in a class of their own. Prized for their geometric designs, fine durable construction, and creative use of vegetable-dyed colours, they make ideal long-lasting rugs and have always stood out for their striking tribal motifs. In our experience, Heriz carpets prove to be among the most versatile decorative weavings, with the ability to unite both modern and traditional design elements in a room.
This charming late 19th Century Heriz carpet has a creative overall design, rather than the traditional central medallion motif, inspired by rare 19th-century rugs from the Caucasus, and lending the composition a feeling of space and balance. The warm terracotta red field serves to compliment the range of gracefully aged vegetable-dyed colours in the drawing, framed by a wide indigo border.
Retained in good condition for everyday use, with its fringes and outer borders preserved on all sides – its colours have taken on a characterful patina with age.
In our experience, Heriz carpets prove to be among the most versatile decorative weavings, with the ability to unite both modern and traditional design elements – this piece is a fine example, to suit a wide variety of spaces.
