Aaron Nejad Gallery specialises in Antique and Decorative carpets, rugs, textiles and tapestries.
Could you give us an introduction to the business?
“I learnt to appreciate antique Persian rugs from my late grandfather, the most knowledgeable dealer I have ever known and an avid collector. I started trading in antique rugs and textiles in 1994, focusing mainly on tribal rugs. Coming from an academic background, I combined my trading activities with research into various types of rugs, including Bakhtiar weavings of Central Persia and Kilims of Eastern Europe. I have travelled widely around the world sourcing carpets and textiles, and have exhibited at numerous fairs and conferences both in the UK and abroad. Since 2015, I have run a gallery in Marylebone.”
When did you first exhibit at the Decorative Fair?
How did you get into collecting antiques?
“By accident. I decided to take a year’s sabbatical from university life. I began trading and never looked back.”
Is there a theme to your collection?
“I started dealing primarily in antique tribal rugs. As my career has progressed, I have widened the range of my interests to include all kinds of weavings from the East to Western Europe. If there is a theme to my choices, it is that I look for quality items which also have decorative appeal. Collecting rugs and textiles is fun. But using great carpets, rugs and textiles to create wonderful decorative settings is very satisfying.”
What initially draws you to an item?
“A famous American rug collector once said to me that there are two kinds of rug collectors: those who love colour and those who love design. For me, colour has always been the priority. The best antique rugs and textiles are made with natural dyes that can create myriad shades of intense colour. This is the first thing that draws me to a great piece.”
Do you have any tips for new customers or collectors?
“Follow your instincts and buy what you like. Consult a reliable dealer for advice. Fairs’ are a great way to compare choices.”
