Georgian tortoiseshell tea caddy with engraved silver stringing, ivory lined interior and monogrammed escutcheon, circa 1800.
Georgian tortoiseshell tea caddy with silver stringing, of octagonal form with engraved decoration and fitted interior.
The exterior is veneered in tortoiseshell across each panel, divided by finely engraved silver stringing, an uncommon feature that creates a clear framework between the panels. The front is fitted with an oval engraved escutcheon above a shield shaped reserve bearing the engraved monogram ‘MM’. The tent top lid is surmounted by a shaped silver loop handle.
Opening the tea caddy reveals an ivory faced interior fitted with a floating lid, mounted with a loop handle. Beneath, the compartment retains traces of the original foil lining.
The tea caddy dates to the Georgian period during the reign of George III, circa 1800.
The caddy is complete with a working lock and tasselled key.
