A c. 1890 Feraghan accent rug, with an allover design on a warm terracotta ground.
Early Feraghan carpets were popular during the 19th century, woven in the same region as the equally sought-after Ziegler Mahal carpets. These pieces are often seen in grand houses in Europe and the UK, known for their quiet formality, soft wool and harmonious colours. Feraghan carpets are especially unique in that they manage to harmonise both tribal and formal elements of rug design, and therefore have the versatility to suit a wide variety of interior styles.
This small-format example, dating to c. 1890, features an open, balanced composition in the central field, with tones of ochre and cornflower blue over a charmingly warm terracotta ground, framed by a tan border of good proportions – an understated, earthy colour scheme, all in organic, vegetable dyes.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use – its organic dyes have taken on a wonderful patina with age.
A striking accent rug, to add charisma to any setting.
