Indian Wool Dhurrie. Circa 1900
Indian Dhurries from the 19th century were normally woven in cotton as the ideal material for a floor covering in a warm climate. It is therefore very unusual to come across one woven in wool, especially one as pretty and decorative as this example. The choice of two colours, a dark pink and a light brown, works extremely well to create a reciprocity between the repeating lattice and the cruciforms. The design is simple and elegant and really catches the eye. The plain light brown border is the perfect frame. We have given it a light surface wash to remove some surface stains and have repaired a couple of very small holes. Now in excellent condition, it is ready for immediate use.
