The top of the Decanter Box is inlaid with a brass plaque with a scroll banner reading Durham House, the original commission for the box. The exterior is finished with twin flush mounted loop handles and a circular brass escutcheon to the front. The Decanter opens from the lid and then via the twin hinged doors at the front which swing open to reveal a deep purple and exotic Coromandel lining with a fully fitted drinks set. The set comprises of a gilded serving tray, two square decanters with faceted stoppers, a central circular decanter and 8 glasses, 4 tumblers and 4 spirit glasses. To the rear of the interior there is a retailers label for Charles Henry, Manchester. Henry was a known stockist of Betjemann design boxes. The combination seen in this particular Decanter box is extremely unusual and not one we have seen before at Mark Goodger Antiques making it a highly desirable model for a collector or connoisseur. It could be possible that the box was a unique commission for the owners at Durham house. We are unmistakably attributing the Decanter box to London firm Betjemann and Sons for the extremely high quality, design and use of particular materials. The Decanter Box dates to the late 19th century during the Victorian period circa 1880.

During the 19th Century, these pieces were highly sought after in the West, inspiring many of the designs of European weavings of the period, and can be found in grand historic homes across the UK and Europe, and continue to be widely sought after today, thanks to their grand scale drawing, delicate colours and silky wool.

An attractive antique Oushak carpet, dating the turn of the last century, with a bold graphic drawing and harmonious array of gracefully aged vegetable dyed colours, with tones of ivory and duck egg blue over a soft red ground, framed by a wide, decorative border.

In very good practical condition for every day use with minimal age-related wear.

A charming example with a quiet formality to compliment a variety of settings, rare in this large squarish format.

It stands on a beautifully carved walnut base with porcelain casters. It has generous proportions beautifully scrolled arm rests and a well sprung frame that reclines back slightly. This was reupholstered fairly recently by the previous owners in a gorgeous gold damask fabric.

The condition is excellent for its age with only some extremely minor wear here and there. There is a little give in the sprung back rest, this could be tightened by an upholsterer if the fabric was stripped back, but it is comfortable and usable as it is.

Width – 30 inches , 76 cm
Depth – 38 inches, 97 cm
Height – 34 inches, 86 cm
Seat height – 16 inches , 41 cm

Until 1768, Savonnerie carpets were produced exclusively by commission of the French royalty, and served as some of the nation’s most high-value diplomatic gifts, gracing the palaces of high-ranking nobility all across Europe. These pieces enjoyed particular favor during the reign of Napoleon, as a staple of Empire Style design, popular internationally among those seeking to emulate the tastes of the French upper classes. Waddesdon Manor, a Victorian mansion well-known for its vast collection of French artworks, possesses nineteen Savonnerie carpets.

This wonderful 19th Century example features a subtle, understated palette, with muted champagne, plum, and coral tones over a dusky pink ground, and sage green accents in the detailing. The composition employs a central lozenge, framed by a wide, decorative border, all adorned with delicate scrolling motifs, and repeated bands of peach and white roses; in the ‘language of flowers’ – that is, the symbolic meanings associated with different coloured roses according to the rules of 19th Century courtship – a combination which evokes love, joy, and grace.

A beautiful early piece, and a rare find given its age and large format, this carpet is retained in good condition for everyday use, with healthy pile throughout – though with some older restoration, finished to a high standard – possessing a refined elegance to suit a tasteful interior.
