From our Accessories collection, we are pleased to offer this Black Forest fox and hound hand carved bookslide from a private collection, dating to the early 20th century, circa 1910.

The linden wood book slide, also known as an adjustable book end, features a central sliding mechanism allowing the width to be altered to accommodate books of varying sizes. The carved base is decorated with scrolling foliate detail and supports two finely carved animal figures. One side depicts a fox perched upon a log, while the opposing side features a hound seated in a similar pose.

The bookslide is fitted with hinged ends, allowing the figures to fold flat for storage when not in use. Both practical and decorative, this is a strong example of early 20th century Black Forest carving with clear attention to form, proportion, and detail.

A contemporary interpretation of 19th century English Arts & Crafts carpets, handwoven in Iran in soft, handspun wool.

This example, features a muted sky blue field, overlaid with repeated floral designs in rich ochre tones across an open field, and framed by a wide ivory border – an understated palette, well suited to this piece’s balanced, overall design, with a high-quality weave which lends a real sense of clarity to its drawing.

A timeless and stylish large-format carpet, to complement a wide variety of settings.

Portugal is home to one of Europe’s most longstanding and prestigious weaving traditions, serving as a center for the production of high-value, intricately designed carpets since at least the 15th century, supposedly originally introduced to the country by the Moors, during the period of Muslim rule in the Iberian peninsula. Among Portugal’s textiles, perhaps none are as widely sought after as its needlepoint rugs – termed Arraiolos carpets – such as this vintage example, finely handwoven some time in the last 30 years.

It features a series of scrolling floral and vegetal motifs, in various delicate tones of green, with lavender, red ochre and cobalt blue accents, over an ivory ground, framed by a wide two-part border, borrowing from the characteristic designs of earlier 19th Century needlepoint works.

A wonderful piece, in excellent condition, which would make a fine addition to a tasteful interior.
