A very large and beautifully made campaign writing box by Gabriel Riddle of London, the rosweood exterior profusely inlaid with intiricate brasswork opening to reveal a leather bound writing slope under which can be found one large storage compartment incorporating three hidden drawers and a further hidden storage compartment in beautifully figured satinwood. The inside of the writing slope bearing an engraved brass plaque inscribed:

“PresentedTo J G Stuart Esq M.D. From the committee of The Scottish Ladies Association For Promoting Female Education in India – Proof of their esteem and value for the services he rendered to the Association while he held the office of treasurer – 1846”

This box is in original condition. It retains its original ink wells with threaded gilded brass lids. The quality of the workmanship and its large size make this the very best example of a writing box of this type. Absolutely no expense spared. Original locks.

While the box was gipven to J G Stuart in 1846, we beleive it to be of slightly earlier manfacture.  England. C.1815

From our Sewing Box collection, we are pleased to offer this Solid Coromandel Anglo Indian and Silver Sewing Box. The Sewing Box of sarcophagus shape made from figured coromandel with Silver mount stood upon four fluted shell feet. The Box with a silver diamond escutcheon, a looped carry handle and a single-handled drawer. When opened the Box reveals a fully fitted interior with stitched yellow silk with a partitioned tray to the body and several slip compartments to the inside of the lid. The top tray lifts out to allow access to further storage below. To the front of the Sewing Box, a drawer pulls forward to access further storage. The feet are hallmarked to the underside with barely legible marks. The box dates to the 19th century circa 1830 late Georgian period.

This antique apple fruit tea caddy is turned in sycamore and modelled as a natural apple, dating to circa 1800.

Carved in a rounded form with a naturalistic button stalk to the top, closely echoing the shape of the original fruit. The surface has developed a warm colour over time consistent with early nineteenth century sycamore.

The caddy retains its original steel escutcheon to the front with matching hinge to the rear. When opened, the interior shows traces of the original silver foil lining, traditionally used to preserve the freshness of tea.

Fruit tea caddies were produced as both functional and decorative objects, reflecting the importance of tea drinking within the home at the turn of the nineteenth century. Their sculptural forms make them particularly desirable to collectors.

The Caucasus have a rich history of rug weaving, stretching back several centuries. The region stands at the crossroads of various cultures, and its carpets reflect this in their creativity and diversity. As such, these pieces are highly sought-after, well-known for their wide range of bold, graphic tribal designs and dynamic use of vegetable-dyed colours.

This Kazak example, employs a more minimalistic, open composition, usually found in much earlier examples, with three grand scale medallions, in earthy terracotta and cornflower blue tones, stamped across a muted indigo colour field.  The restrained layout of the central field is set in a playful contrast with the design along the border, with a geometric diamond motif repeated across an ivory ground.  A bold layout, which lends this carpet a modern aesthetic sensibility.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders preserved on all sides; its vegetable dyed colours have taken on a fine age-related patina.

A striking carpet, in an unusually large format compared to other examples from the region, to add tribal charm and charisma to any interior.

The Tea Caddy turned in Sycamore shaped as a natural Pear fruit in squat form with globular body and tapered lid surmounted by a naturalistic stalk to the top. The front mounted with the original 18th century steel escutcheon and hinge to the rear. The interior of the Pear contains traces of the original silver lining and dates to the turn of the 19th century circa 1800.
