Art Deco Circa 1930

From our Accessories collection, we are pleased to offer this Novelty Car Shaped Cigarette Case from the Art Deco Period. The Cigarette Case shaped as an abstract car with four movable wheels features two lucite lids which hinge open to access the cigarettes. To the top of the case there is a small ball handle which features a shagreen panel with match striker to the underside and vesta box beneath for storing matches. The Cigarette Case dates to the prolific Art Deco period and the first half of the 20th century circa 1930.

Shagreen is a leather made from sharkskin or the skin of a Stingray. This type of Shagreen was first made popular by Jean-Claude Galluchat (d1774) a master leather worker in the Court of Louis XV in France. It became a fashion amongst the French aristocracy and later throughout Europe. Shagreen is derived from the French word “Chagrin”.

Art Deco was a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design that first appeared in France in the 1910s. It flourished in the United States and Europe during the 1920s to early 1930s. It was hugely prevalent through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects and even influenced fashion and jewellery. Art Deco has influenced bridges, buildings, ships, ocean liners, trains, cars, trucks, buses, furniture, and everyday objects like radios and vacuum cleaners. It has become extremely popular today and is highly desirable to collectors and trendsetters in the fashion industry.

Aquarium Lucite Panels

From our Accessories collection, we are delighted to offer this Dunhill aquarium service sized table lighter. The Aquarium Lighter with a gold plated body features a lucite body decorated with an aquarium scene, the two larger sides feature fish with the smaller sides having vegetation and rockery. The Lighter is embossed to the front of the lifting arm Dunhill and to the base of the lighter Dunhill with the registration number 143752, made in England. The Lighter dates to the middle of the 20th century and the Mid-Century Modern period circa 1950.

The Alfred Dunhill Aquarium Lighter is in fully working order, it will need lighter fuel to continue operation which is readily available.

Dunhill Lighters

specifically the classic petrol lift arm table lighter was introduced by Dunhill in 1928 running until the introduction of gas in the 1960’s. In the 1950s, Ben Shillingford worked for Dunhill, perfecting the art of carving and painting lucite panels to resemble miniature aquariums. We see today’s finished products here, with some beautifully unique designs making them highly collected.

Dunhill

Alfred Dunhill was Born September 30th 1872. From 1890 Dunhill ran a company that sold motoring accessories through mail order under the name Dunhill’s Motorities. In 1902 he opened a shop on Conduit Street, Mayfair which sold clothing and accessories to chauffeurs and their employers. In 1904 he developed the “windshield pipe”, which would allow motorists to smoke whilst driving, and went on to open a tobacconist in St. James in 1907. The shop offered tailored tobacco blends and its success meant that Dunhill could expand to shops in New York and Paris in the 1920’s. With his international ambitions, Dunhill created a modern luxury goods market. In 1921 the company received its first royal warrant, as a tobacconist to Edward Prince of Wales. Dunhill also supplied Winston Churchill and Siegfried Sassoon. In 1924 Dunhill launched the “Unique Lighter” which was the world’s first lighter that could be operated with one hand. Dunhill passed the chairmanship of the company to his son Alfred Henry in 1928.

Dunhill Aquarium Lucite Table Lighter

From our Accessories collection, we are pleased to offer this Alfred Dunhill Half-Giant Aquarium Table Lighter dating to the mid twentieth century, circa 1950.

The table lighter features a silver plated mechanism mounted above a solid lucite body composed of four inset panels, each hand decorated to create a continuous underwater aquarium scene. The two larger panels depict fish swimming through layered blue water, while the narrower sides show aquatic vegetation and rock formations, giving depth and movement to the composition.

The lifting arm is embossed Dunhill, with further Dunhill markings and the registration number 737418 stamped to the interior of the arm. The weight and scale identify this example as the desirable Half-Giant model, intended for table or desk use rather than pocket carry.

The lighter is in full working order and will require lighter fuel prior to use. A striking and highly collectible example of Dunhill’s mid century novelty production, combining technical precision with decorative design.

From our Barware collection, we are delighted to offer this Art Deco Master Incolor Blue Cocktail Shaker. The Cocktail Shaker a world famous icon from the Art Deco period with its Blue bakelite (moulded urea formaldehyde) tapered body, silver plated ribbed shoulder and lid with eight built in recipes on a turntable window. The lid can be removed and used as a measure which is stamped 1 Gill inside the lid. A secondary lid is housed upon the pouring spout and is removed ready for pouring the desired cocktail. The hip of the flask can be unscrewed to fill the body with your favoured liquor before mixing and has a removable strainer which sits on the bottom half of the body. The Cocktail Shaker is signed to the base Patents Pending The Master Incolor Cocktail Shaker, Made in England and dates to the Art Deco period and the first half of the 20th century circa 1935. This particular model is an unusual model for two reasons, the first being that it has a plain silver band that runs around the shaker instead of a triple grooved design that you normally see. And the second is when the cups removed contains the eight recipes, typically the models cup is separate from the recipes. We believe this is likely a very early model or prototype which was then changed. These original Master Incolor Cocktail Shakers were designed by Lawson Clarke for the english firm Wilson & Gill and were available in a range of six colours. Today they have become a collectable icon of the Art Deco era and are a rare accompaniment to any collection.
